Science Explains: How do Heavy Metal vocalists perform without damaging their vocal folds?

True story: I was sitting in my dentist’s chair this past Monday morning and we got to talking about metal (I recently turned him onto Gojira). He asked me how it was possible that all these metal vocalists are able to scream their guts out for extended periods of time and not constantly a) blow out their voices and b) develop nodules on their vocal cords? Fair questions, and I was somewhat embarrassed to admit that I didn’t have any good answers.

Luckily, science does! According to this new video from Inside Science, San Francisco’s Dr. Krzysztof Izdebski of the Pacific Voice and Speech Foundation, who specializes in working with patients that have damaged their vocal cords, believes that metal singers have basically figured out a way to do what comes naturally to human babies. And no, he’s not talking about Lead Singer’s Disease/throwing tantrums:

A little baby has all the sounds — it has the sounds of scream and growl, and inhalation and high pitch and whistle and low pitch, and so I thought, wow, you know, all of this we have, we learn from the beginning. We have it and then we somehow lose it, and the patients who suffer can’t learn how to do this.

Dr. Izdebski goes on to explain that by using a very, very high-speed camera (16,000 frames per second — by way of contrast, note that a movie is traditionally only 24 frames per second) placed inside a singer’s throat, he was able to determine that the vocal cords of your average metal frontman or woman never collide, which is how damage to those cords is normally created:

The images that we recorded clearly show that it’s produced predominately, predominately by structures above the glottis. So, the vocal folds do open and vibrate but actually don’t collide, and the entire sick area above — aryepiglottic folds, arachnoids, epiglottis — everything claps and dances, basically, and creates vibrations and creates acoustic orchestration… It’s that the area above [that’s] very loose and the air turbulence that comes through. The air that comes through produces turbulence, and the turbulence produces the sound.

Dr. Izdebski also believes this knowledge could be helpful to his patients:

When you crush the larynx it cannot be repaired, and these people suffer — they cannot talk. So, you know, we can use this, this technology — this artistic technology — perhaps to try to restore some phonation in these individuals.

Fascinating stuff, right?

The brothers Max and Iggor Cavalera formed the legendarily trailblazing heavy metal band SEPULTURA as teenagers together in 1984. A decade after Max left SEPULTURA and meanwhile released seven successful records with SOULFLY, the two brothers got back together in 2006 to form CAVALERA CONSPIRACY: A bold testament to the talent and power these two possess together. SLIPKNOT’s Corey Taylor reacts to remarks made by Linkin Park’s front man.

Corey Taylor shared his opinion on Chester Bennington telling fans to stab themselves in the face if they think Linkin Park’s new pop-oriented direction is driven by money.

Corey said on Shmonty in the Morning (via Loudwire):

I understand where he’s at. God, I would’ve never say it the way he did, but you get frustrated and you want people to embrace the evolution. At the same time, you should probably be very, very fortunate that people this far along the line still love that music you made. For what it’s worth, it’s a great fusion rock album. It’s got pop elements to it, the songs are great, so if you’re going to have a problem, it’s a good problem to have. Be fortunate for what you have, be fortunate for that fact that people are still coming to see you to hear the music. Give it a little time, you have to give it a little time.

In retrospect, maybe two or three years from now you put out an album and it makes them appreciate this one more. You have to pick your spots, dude, and this is coming from the guy who’s notorious for running his mouth.

He also added about how Stone Sour‘s music was received by the Slipknot fans. “I had a couple shows where I took money out of my own pocket, put it in the dude’s hand and got him the hell out of my [Stone Sour] show. It took a long, long time to get over it. It was a long journey… well after ‘Through Glass.’ Honestly, it wasn’t even until the ‘House of Gold and Bones’ albums that it felt like we were really starting to get away from that kind of weirdness.

DEMONIC RESURRECTION release new music video for the track ‘Narasimha- The Man-Lion’

Indian Metal veterans DEMONIC RESURRECTION have unleashed a brand new music video for the track Narasimha- The Man-Lion taken from the recent most album ‘Dashavatar‘. Read the review of the album here- Dashavatar review.

The track is packed with an agonizing sensation that rips through our ears. Poisonous guitar sections, with great drum work and terrific vocals by Demonstealer. The video compliments what the track stands for. Directed by Guilherme Henriques. The video describes the enmity that prevails between Lord Vishnu and Hiranyakashipu. The latter’s younger brother, Hiranyaksha was slain by Varaha, one of the Avatars of Lord Vishnu. Enraged by this incident, Hiranyakashipu decided to gain immortality by performing a penance for Lord Brahma, one of the Hindu gods, alongside Lord Vishnu and Shiva; who promised to give him a boon of his choice. Hiranyakashipu made a smart choice in choosing his boon. This video depicts his tale of desiring power over others and the strength of God’s protection above the world. It also describes Hiranyakashipu’s hatred towards his son, who betrays him and becomes a devotee of Lord Vishnu, his enemy. Angered by this move, he attempts to kill his son as well. In the final phase, he gets killed by the Narasimha Avatar of Lord Vishnu in the most gorifying way.

12 year old bassist to tour with KORN!

Korn have announced that the 12-year-old son of Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo will tour South America with them later this month. Tye Trujillo plays in the band The Helmets and will fill in for regular bassist Fieldy who can’t make the dates next month in Columbia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Peru “due to unforeseen circumstances.”

Fieldy will rejoin Korn for their North American dates which get underway with a set at the Carolina Rebellion on May 6. Korn say in a statement: “On April 17 Korn is heading down to South America for a run of dates in Columbia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Peru. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Fieldy is unable to make the shows so the band will be joined by a special guest. Filling in for bass duties will be Tye Trujillo – the 12-year old son of Metallica’s Robert Trujillo and member of NorCal group The Helmets. We are bummed Fieldy can’t join us on this run but excited to do a few gigs with a young player like Tye. We look forward to welcoming our brother Fieldy back when we return to the States in May.
